Video Transcoding and Range-Request Streaming on Constrained Nodes
Streaming 4K video recordings from mobile phones across residential internet connections requires adaptive byte-range delivery and efficient container repacking. Embers utilizes FFmpeg hardware acceleration and HTTP 206 partial content streaming to deliver smooth playback on modest hardware.
Byte-Range Requests and Container Repacking
High-definition smartphone video recordings use HEVC or H.264 codecs with variable bitrate profiles. Serving these assets as flat static files requires browsers to download hundreds of megabytes before playback initiates.
Embers implements RFC 7233 byte-range parsing on all media stream routes, enabling instant video seeking. Incoming clips are remuxed into fragmented MP4 containers with the FastStart moov atom relocated to the file header.

The stream controller validates byte offsets and pipes direct filesystem slices into the response socket:
// src/controllers/videoStream.ts
import { Request, Response } from 'express';
import fs from 'fs';
export function streamVideoHandler(filePath: string, req: Request, res: Response): void {
const stat = fs.statSync(filePath);
const fileSize = stat.size;
const range = req.headers.range;
if (range) {
const parts = range.replace(/bytes=/, '').split('-');
const start = parseInt(parts[0], 10);
const end = parts[1] ? parseInt(parts[1], 10) : fileSize - 1;
const chunkSize = end - start + 1;
const file = fs.createReadStream(filePath, { start, end });
res.writeHead(206, {
'Content-Range': `bytes ${start}-${end}/${fileSize}`,
'Accept-Ranges': 'bytes',
'Content-Length': chunkSize,
'Content-Type': 'video/mp4'
});
file.pipe(res);
} else {
res.writeHead(200, {
'Content-Length': fileSize,
'Content-Type': 'video/mp4'
});
fs.createReadStream(filePath).pipe(res);
}In-Flight Remuxing Command
When incoming videos contain misplaced metadata indices, Embers executes a non-destructive remux pass:
# Repack video container to move index atom to head without re-encoding
$ ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -codec copy -movflags +faststart output.mp4 -y
# Verify FastStart optimization via ffprobe
$ ffprobe -v trace output.mp4 2>&1 | grep -B 2 "type:'moov'"
