After five to ten years of continuous journaling, a digital garden accumulates thousands of daily log files. Without deliberate archival engineering, directory indexing slows, search indexing consumes excessive RAM, and flash storage media risks bit rot. The Bosun Logbook implements a hierarchical tiering strategy for multi-year daily notes.

Directory Partitioning and Inode Hierarchy

Storing 3,650 files in a single flat directory stresses filesystem directory index trees. Logbook enforces a decade-year-month folder hierarchy:

This guarantees that no directory ever contains more than 31 entries, keeping POSIX directory traversals instantaneous even on low-power ARM nodes.

Decadal Archival Packing

For notes older than 730 days (two years), the archival daemon compresses monthly directories into deterministic squashfs read-only images:

The resulting squashfs containers can be mounted locally on demand via loopback devices. The files remain standard plaintext markdown, fully readable by standard tools like grep, cat, and tree-sitter parsers fifty years into the future.
